WILLIAM HODGINS. Lay Flat! Rug should not take over the room. Wool—not nylon! DONNA LIVINGSTON. Most often, I love to kick start a project with an Antique area rug. I look for area rugs that are high quality hand knotted with both wool and silk.
RODERICK SHADE. Depends on the usage. An area rug for a single female client is very different from that for a family with 5 kids 2 dogs and a cat. I always seek out area rugs that are durable and beautiful. Durability and cleanability are two factors that are always important to me.
ROBERT COUTURIER. I look for authenticity, as well as age in antique rug. I own about 15 of them ranging from 200 year old to a 1940 Bessarabian one. I also try to make sure they have their original colors which is quite hard since so many of them have been restored in an appalling fashion.
SALLY SIRKIN LEWIS. lity and appropriateness for the interior. As to size, I think it important that if there is furniture on the rug the furniture should not sit partially on the rug and partially off. $200 - $300/yard.
