ROBERT COUTURIER. I look for authenticity, as well as age in antique rug. I own about 15 of them ranging from 200 year old to a 1940 Bessarabian one. I also try to make sure they have their original colors which is quite hard since so many of them have been restored in an appalling fashion.
The shape of the carpet is entirely dependant upon the shape of the room and the layout of the furniture. Sometimes you like the carpet to appear as an island in a hard space, supporting the furniture, and sometimes you like it to fill the entire space. There are no rules.
ELLIE CULLMAN. We look for beauty and durability. Every rug should be well made with color fast dyes and good yarns and straight seams regardless of whether it is hand made of silk or machine made of wool. For bedrooms, a good rule of thumb for size is to leave approximately 12" of floor space between the edge of the rug and the base molding.
Initially, area rugs – as we know them today – were used for practical and protective purposes. In cold climates, they provided warmth and a comfortable and cozy bed to sleep on. In more tropical climates, they were often used for protection, from thorns, sharp rocks and even wildlife.
