I love to mix vintage rugs (Orientals right up through Navajos) with custom carpets designed specifically for texture and color. Blending them throughout a period or modern home updates the old and anchors the new.

From animal hides salvaged for warmth under the feet in cold rock caves, to palm leaves, hay, and other vegetation being used in the forests as protection from the elements, there is no doubt that area rugs have a deeply rooted history that dates back to the beginning of evolution.

Scale is everything! Keep details of the room in mind; such as door swing and furniture leg placement when selecting size. A new carpet be around $15-20k, an antique will run approx $50-lOOk.

I own about 15 of them ranging from 200 year old to a 1940 Bessarabian one. I also try to make sure they have their original colors which is quite hard since so many of them have been restored in an appalling fashion.

I thought that a mix of contemporary furniture and a historic carpet would imply the ascent of man and that we are continuing to evolve. Often I use a carpet to pull in all of the color elements of an interior and its adjoining views and gardens to create a harmonious continuum. I prefer a wool/silk blend for its feel and sheen, especially if people are going to roll around or play on it.
