When choosing an area rug, rich color and a good hand that feels nice under foot (barefoot) are essential. Unlike most American designers who start with a rug and build the room up from there I like to take a more European approach in which the rug is just a part of the overall design; I hate it when all of the room‘s colors look correspond to the colors of the rug…that looks a little too studied or "decorated" to me.

For living rooms rugs, we would leave about 18"-24" off the wall depending on the size of the room and whether or not the room is shaped or if there is a hearthstone. The rug, a beautiful and richly designed piece, is believed to have been made in Mongolia, featured a hand-knotting technique called Ghiordes that is still in use today. Even though it is argued by some historians that the first woven pile rugs were made in Mongolia, it is widely agreed that it is the Persians who perfected it.

I own about 15 of them ranging from 200 year old to a 1940 Bessarabian one. I also try to make sure they have their original colors which is quite hard since so many of them have been restored in an appalling fashion.

I love to mix vintage rugs (Orientals right up through Navajos) with custom carpets designed specifically for texture and color. Blending them throughout a period or modern home updates the old and anchors the new.
