A good modern 10x8 rug should cost you between $7,000 to $10,000 depending on the silk or wool content. A fine antique rug of that size however can cost in excess of $50,000.

I thought that a mix of contemporary furniture and a historic carpet would imply the ascent of man and that we are continuing to evolve. Often I use a carpet to pull in all of the color elements of an interior and its adjoining views and gardens to create a harmonious continuum. I prefer a wool/silk blend for its feel and sheen, especially if people are going to roll around or play on it.

When choosing an area rug, rich color and a good hand that feels nice under foot (barefoot) are essential. When determining the size, I personally prefer that all of the furniture sit entirely on or entirely off the rug —never half on or half off. Spend what you can afford.

Unlike most American designers who start with a rug and build the room up from there I like to take a more European approach in which the rug is just a part of the overall design; I hate it when all of the room‘s colors look correspond to the colors of the rug…that looks a little too studied or "decorated" to me.
